Firstly, Stefan Struve needs to learn some ground defence STAT.
Having said that, what a comeback.
He now has a lip that Jay-Z would look at and say "Goddamn thats a big-ass lip!" ( whatsup Eddie Murphy!)
Junior Dos Santos is the real motherfuckin' deal, as we pretty much all knew, and consolidated his number one contender slot. He made Big Country look like a sloppy amateur, which is no mean feat, as behind the giant belly and redneck mullet, Roy Nelson has some legit skill.
This fight answered the question about JDS's gas tank and takedown defence but left questions regarding his ground game. We still havent seen Cigano fight off his back. I thought there was a decent chance we would see it in 3 rounds, but his TD Defence is solid. Whether its solid enough to stop Lesnar or Valasquez is a different matter entirely though, and when they take him down, ( and thats almost certain to happen at some stage ) we can only hope he is better off his back than Skysraper Struve.
The only positive that can be taken away for Roy Nelson is that he has a huge heart and a head full of concrete. Might be time to start really training like an athlete Roy.
Matt Hughes won me money as an almost 3-1 dog in a fight I figured he should be favourite in.
Matt Serra must have been almost suicidal watching this one, as the newest inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame has now systematically taken out his him, his idol Royce Gracie, his coach Renzo Gracie and today the guy that was meant to avenge them all, his teammate Ricardo Almeida.
Hughes is the most dominant WW of all time, and showed he still has plenty of fight left in him, although he wont be matching up against the top 3-5 welterweights these days.
Speaking of top welterweights, Jon Fitch once again dominated Thiago Alves and earned himself a crack at GSP's title.
I feel a little sorry for Jon Fitch, he reminds me of the UFC version of Matt Lindland in that he is an incredibly dominant wrestler and controlling fighter, easily top 5 at his weight, but is as boring as watching 'Valhalla Rising' on repeat. He is the most deserving contender and the one guy you KNOW the UFC hopes never wins the title. It would be nigh on impossible to hype his fights.
As for Silva v Sonnen, Chael talked more trash and got more personal on the Spider than any fighter in UFC history and for the 23 of the 25 minutes backed up every word of it. Supposedly Anderson had an injured rib going into the fight, but give credit where it is due, Sonnen got in his face, took him down and beat on him for almost 35 minutes.
A LOT of people wanted to see Chael win, due to Silvas ridiculous performances his last view events where he has spent more time dancing and running, being 'evasive' than actually fighting. This would have been bad enough if it was because he was overmatched, but it was made worse because in the rare moment he engaged he showed the glimpses of brilliance that we came to love about him.
I thought that his pulblic rebuke from UFC president Dana White after his last bout combined with Sonnens incessant trash talk might re-ignite Silva's killer instinct, but if it did we werent givin the opportunity to see it.
In the end, he had a great come from behind submission win, which while impressive, is a little less so, considering it was over a guy known for having suspect submission defence.
It also laid out the blueprint for how to beat Silva, something I'm sure GSP was watching with interest. Whether thats was due to injury or not remains to be seen.
