Call me one of those jaded, old cynical fucks, but to me, Hiphop used to be dope, it used to have some meaning and some purpose.
I remember an era when Hiphop was political, intelligent, fun, witty, tough, brutal, miltant, vivid, debauched and many other things but most of all unique and original.
It was not a whole bunch of carbon copy, autotuned, purely materialistic cookie cutter pop stars calling themselves hiphop.
Thats not to say that there is zero good hiphop coming out now, because theres still some dope shit, you just have to sift through so much crap to find the one gem.
So im gonna make it easy for ya, im going to go back to where it started for me, and drop some classics along the way to school up those who came later and missed the Golden Era and when I do come across some current heat I'll let ya know about that too.
Im gonna kick it off with Run DMC as Raising Hell was the first Hiphop I ever bought, I saved up my pocket money from chores and thrashed that bad boy on my dad's old turntable.
Instead of grabbing a video of Raising Hell (everyone knows Walk This Way/My Adidas) I decided to drop a great clip of what I consider to be Run DMCs greatest album - Tougher Than Leather.
It seems like although many heads know the song, not many have seen the clip, so enjoy.
Unfortunately I cant embed this one, but click here.
RIP Jam Master Jay
